One Drink Too Many!
I used to drink a lot and I spent some time in jail for drunk and disorderly conduct. Once I was sentenced 30days for assaulting an officer. In the spring of 1976 I went to Wichita, KS. with a friend of mine after I got divorced. Those were my hippie days. Long hair, mid-twenties and looking for a party. I didn’t even think much about God. Then I moved to Albuquerque, N M in September of 1976. The very first day in Albuquerque I got into a fight with an Indian and a Mexican and was thrown in the “drunk tank”. When Christmas was only two weeks away I decided to visit my brother Steve in Augusta, GA. Little did I know that was exactly where God wanted me to be. I was still drinking a lot and I didn’t have a job.

My brother worked 3rd shift and I spent most nights at home drinking Billy Beer and watching TV. One night I was watching TV and everything was either re-runs or just plain boring. So, I decided to turn on the religious channel to make fun of them. Well, Oral Roberts was on and he was laying his hands on people and saying “Heal!” as they fell to the ground from the power of God. I thought that was hilarious. After he went off the Seven Hundred Club came on and the host was a black man named Ben Kenchlow. Pat Robertson must have been on vacation or something. Anyway, as he started talking about Jesus and how God had this plan to save the world from their sins, I stopped making fun and began to listen.

He was speaking about being born again and eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. He quoted scriptures like, Romans 10:17 that says “Faith comes by hearing and hearing the word of God” Then he said you must recognize you are a sinner Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of the Lord” Next he talked about confessing your sins and acknowledging Jesus Christ as your Savior. Romans 10:9-10 “That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him form the dead you shall be saved. For with the heart man believes unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” After that he said, Romans 10:13 “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Then he asked if anyone would like join him in a prayer to receive Jesus as their Savior. He said if you do, then place you hand on the TV as a point of contact. There I was with a Billy Beer in my hand, kneeling on the floor with my other hand on the TV, ready to give my life to Jesus. He prayed “Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins and cleanse me from all unrighteousness. I believe that Jesus died on the cross for my sins and rose from the dead that I might have eternal life. I receive Him now as my Lord and Savior. In Jesus name, Amen.” I was saved! Now what?

Well, I didn't know what to do expect, but I had to get hold of a Bible. There wasn't one in the house, so I found one in a store. The last time I tried to read it, I was in a jail cell. I started in Mattews gospel and read " So and so begat so and so" I couldn't even pronounce the names. So, I threw it up agaist the wall and said to myself, this isn't gonna help me". Tis time it was different. I started in John's gospel and read "In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God." Later in the chapter it said " And the word became flesh and dwelt among us."

For the first time, it made sense to me. I couldn't put it down. Something inside of me changed and was helping me to understand what I was reading. It was then that I realized I really am saved. God's Holy Spirit was teaching me His word.
